Our Story

Oxford University United Methodist Church is a healthy and vibrant Christ-centered Church that participates in the mission of God to heal and renew all things by practicing the way of Jesus together. Located in the heart of Oxford, Mississippi, we serve 700 people over three services on Sunday morning. OU has a long history of partnering with families to raise the next generation in the way of Jesus. 

Custodian – Second Shift

Reports to: Director of Operations with input from Building and Facilities Manager and Events Coordinator
Position Summary: Performs during the afternoons and early evenings the cleaning, care, and general housekeeping and upkeep of the church building and grounds, general and preventive maintenance, and setup and tear down for various church events.  

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform housekeeping and cleaning duties to include, but not be limited to, sweeping, mopping, steaming, waxing, and wiping of glass surfaces.  
  • Open and lock buildings on assigned days and times and adjust HVAC.    
  • Perform setup and tear down for events in Wesley Hall, the Modern Sanctuary, the Methodist Activities Center (MAC), Sunday School Classrooms, and other rooms, as needed.  
  • Maintain the church grounds by picking up loose trash and emptying trash containers, blowing walks, and weeding beds.  
  • Clean church restrooms, as designated.   
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on church vehicles such as cleaning, checking the oil, tire pressure, and gas levels.  
  • Use personal vehicle to pick up and drop off materials for the church.  
  • Report mechanical, structural, or electrical conditions needing repair.  
  • Assist with setup and cleanup after funerals, weddings, and other church activities.  
  • Perform similar or related duties as assigned or required.

Nursery Coordinator

Job Type: Part Time
Reports to: Associate Pastor
Position Summary: Works with children and volunteers to oversee OU’s nursery ministry. 

Department Responsibilities
  • Oversee the nursery and special needs ministry on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, monthly staff meetings, VBS and special events. The Coordinator is expected to be present on Sunday mornings (approximately 8 am – 12:15 pm). For other nights when nursery is an integral part of the programmatic ministry, the coordinator will be present and/or arrange for workers to be present. This includes occasionally on the following programs (these are not weekly):
    • Wednesday evenings for LifeGroups (approximately 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm) 
    • Sunday evenings for special events 
    • Tuesday evenings for choir or handbell practice if necessary
    • Christmas Eve service
    • Ash Wednesday
    • Maundy Thursday
    • Good Friday
    • Easter Sunday
    • Weddings when contacted by the wedding coordinator
    • Other special events as they are developed 
  • Adhere to the Safe Sanctuaries Policies and Ministry Safe Training Guidelines and ensure nursery staff are trained in CPR and First Aid.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the appropriate number of nursery workers per year to maintain the appropriate kids to worker ratio. 
  • Maintain a monthly nursery team schedule and assess needs with the PCFM on a weekly basis.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers for the nursery.
  • Maintain contact information for participants and other relevant records.
  • Purchase and maintain necessary equipment.
  • Interact with parents and assist with the resolution of any problems.
  • Ensure the nursery is clean, organized, and well-stocked at all times.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Early childhood/elementary education degree OR at least three years of experience working with children and families.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communications (oral/written) skills 
  • Dependable and strong work history.
  • CPR & First Aid training (current certification or willing to get recertification or training).
  • Physical demands include frequent sitting, standing, walking, and lifting. 

Salary
  • The Coordinator position is up to 12-15 hours a week, $18-$20 an hour, depending upon experience.

56 Ministry Intern

Reports to: 56 Ministry Coordinator and Pastor of Discipleship

Ministry Duties & Expectations

56 Gatherings

  • Administrative Duties
    • Set up & cleanup for Wednesday night programming
    • Purchase/pick up needed supplies 
    • Organize materials
    • Arrange for photographers for programs
    • Collect/organize pictures
    • Manage 56 Instagram
  • Relational Duties
    • Be present with kids during program time
    • Lead small group of 56 kids during program time
    • Engage in contact ministry with 56 kids, including school visits, ball games, and other social activities.

56 Events

  • Work with 56 Coordinator to plan and administer social events
  • Work with 56 Coordinator to plan and administer retreats, events, and milestone events
  • Collaborate with Pastor of Discipleship and 56 Coordinator to plan mission activities 
  • Assist pastor to children and families with created by God weekend (date TBD)

Candidate Will Ideally Possess The Following Qualities:  

  • Mature Christian faith with strong and proactive leadership skills who is self-aware, competent, and able to work with, equip, and empower staff and volunteers. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for all age levels. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize. 
  • Adaptable and flexible while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Can handle sensitive information with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with Google Products (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms etc) and social media preferred
  • Must be a team player and service-oriented.

OU Preschool Programs Lead Teacher/Assistant Teacher

Discovery Day School and First Discoveries are ministries of Oxford University United Methodist Church. OU’s Preschool Programs offer a nurturing, safe environment in which children feel loved, respected and valued while they are encouraged to develop to their fullest potential socially, emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.

Discovery Day School Teaching Positions

DDS offers a child-centered curriculum based on teaching age-appropriate skills and concepts with a variety of teaching strategies.  Our concepts and skills are based on the MS Dept. of Education Early Learning Standards and enhanced by the Learning Without Tears Curriculum.  Children and teachers of all nationalities and religions are accepted and welcome. DDS serves only children who are potty-trained and verbal. DDS Pre-kindergarten students are three or four years old by September 1 and attend Monday – Friday.

Lead Teachers: DDS lead teachers are certified teachers and/or have a degree in education or a child-related field.

Assistant Teachers: High School Diploma or higher; not required to have a background in early childhood education, though some do.


First Discoveries Teaching Positions

FD is designed to provide a nurturing environment while giving mothers and other caregivers a regular block of time to meet personal and family needs. First Discoveries provides opportunities for toddlers and preschoolers to interact with a small group of children their own age on a regular basis and to enjoy happy learning experiences with loving teachers.  Our First Discoveries teachers complete professional development hours in early childhood education courses.  

FD lead and assistant teachers are not required to have a background in early childhood, though some do.
